Care Confidential

CareConfidential began in 1987 and has recently been established as an independent charity.

CareConfidential is concerned about the welfare of women and their partners in relation to pregnancy and pregnancy loss, including abortion. CareConfidential provides free and confidential support for women and their partners facing a crisis pregnancy or post abortion concerns.

CareConfidential supports a nationwide network of 150 independent pregnancy advice and support centres, run by over 800 trained advisors, who are mostly volunteers. Read more »

Christians Against Poverty

In 1996 John and Lizzie Kirkby felt God call them to help the poor and needy in their home town of Bradford.

John gave up a successful career in the finance industry and started ‘Christians Against Poverty’ (CAP), from their spare room with a donation of just ten pounds in his pocket. Read more »

Community Money Advice

Community Money Advice became a charity in 2003 to help churches and other local organisations to set up money advice centres.

But the history really begins in 1997, with the setting up of the Community Debt Advice Centre in Burgess Hill. At the time, there were no other christian debt advice organisations in the country, and volunteers had to learn how to set up and run a centre on their own. Once the Burgess Hill centre was up and running, enquiries starting coming in from all over the country from groups wanting advice on starting their own centres. Read more »

Hope Into Action

Hope into Action was started by Ed Walker and some other passionate trustees.

Ed spent 9 years in Africa working in war zones. On returning to England, he met an ex-offender who had just left the gate, but had nowhere to go. He could not believe that in the 21st century this problem had not been cracked.

He was also struck that:

a) the 'what' the homeless really need and want is a home. While night-shelters, day centres,soup-kitchens are providing an excellent service: they do not meet the primary needs of the homeless. Read more »

Romance Academy

Romance Academy began life as the subject of a BBC2 series called 'No Sex Please We're Teenagers' which sought to explode some myths aorund teen sex; namely that everyone is doing it and that the things teens most need to know about is how not to get pregnant or an STI.

The leaders of the first Romance Academy (Rachel and Dan) took their fledging group of twelve young 'disciples' through a programme of saying 'no' to sex and 'yes' to deepening friendships, a positive view of relationships and a greater awareness of the importance of love and commitment in all relationships. StreetSpace

StreetSpace officially started nationally in April 2010. The pilot projects in Chard, Chagford and Birmingham paved the way for what was learned to be applied and rolled out quickly. The first month was involved with responding to project enquiries and putting the infrastructure into place.

We now have 18 linked projects and have a clear pathway for new projects to grow and existing projects or churches to link up: Branches, Partnerships and Alongside.

The Lighthouse Group (TLG)

In the mid 1990s, Christian Volunteers from one Church in Bradford opened a youth club for local young people. As many as half of the young people who came were having issues at school.

The response was the TLG Education Centre Programme – a 12 week opportunity for young people to be supported to tackle issues, gain qualifications and return to school.

In 2003 TLG were part of a national pilot to award GCSE equivalent qualifications outside of mainstream school for the first time, and in the same year registered with Ofsted as an Independent School. Read more »

Trussell Foodbanks

“Whilst fundraising for Bulgaria in Salisbury in 2000, Paddy Henderson of Trussell Trust received a call from a desperate mother in Salisbury saying “my children are going to bed hungry tonight – what are YOU going to do about it”.

“Paddy investigated local indices of deprivation and ‘hidden hunger’ in the UK. The shocking results showed that significant numbers of local people faced short term hunger as a result of a sudden crisis.

“Paddy started Salisbury foodbank in his garden shed, providing three days of emergency food to local people in crisis. Read more »
